Drills

All schools practice one school safety & security drills each month.  The four drills practiced include the following:

• Active Shooter Situation
• Bomb Threat/Incident
• Evacuation
• Lockdown

Each school also conducts a fire drill each month

• Fire Alarm/Fire Emergency

General Information

The practice of these drills helps the district prepare in the event of a true crisis. Each drill allows for the adults to debrief and recommend improvements to the procedures practiced or to the physical facilities to enhance safety.

In addition, each summer, the district assembles interested parties – including school personnel, parent representatives, city police, and city fire officials. These summer meetings allow for a formal review of the district Safety & Security Plan. Adjustments are made to the overall plan each summer and a copy of the new plan is provided to Incident Team, Building Principals, and the local police/fire officials. The faculty review changes/updates to the plan early in the school year and are provided the outline for procedures associated with Crisis Drill and Plans.

Students are familiar with the above drill procedures. Teachers explain, in an age-appropriate manner, the purpose of the drills and the importance associated with their practice.

In the case of a true emergency, the district will make every attempt to communicate with parents/guardians using the Global Connect telephone system, the district website, district Facebook, and/or district Twitter account. In most emergencies, parents should wait for direction to find out the best way to support the safety of all involved.

The safety of your children is a primary interest to the Woodbury City Public Schools faculty and staff, and we want to be prepared if an emergency situation should arise. In addition to the drills allowing students and staff to become familiar with emergency procedures, the local police department are aware of our practice schedule and will be able to monitor the schools during drill practice in order to provide feedback.
