The Woodbury School District believes the primary purpose of the SLMC is to support the curricular needs of each school. They should accomplish this purpose by being leaders as well as followers in the implementing, enriching and supporting of the total educational program. Active participation by teachers in the library media programs are vital factors in a successful SLMC. In addition, we support the view of the American Association of School Librarians that the SLMC has a responsibility to "contribute to the development of the social, intellectual and spiritual values of the students." Further the SLMC should help promote reading as a life long activity for all students.

HOW DO I GET A LIBRARY CARD?
Every student enrolled in Evergreen Avenue Elementary School is a member of the SLMC. Students do not carry library cards.
If you do not have a library card for the Woodbury Public Library - Mrs. Doukakis can provide you with an application that you will have to fill out then take it to the WPL with your parent.
HOW DO I BORROW LIBRARY BOOKS?
The Circulation Desk is located just inside the entrance on the right side of the SLMC. Mrs. Doukakis will be able to help you check out books and other library materials.
On the book card please print your first and last name and your room number. Mrs. Doukakis will stamp the return date on the book slip in your book.
WHAT ARE MY RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN I CHECK OUT LIBRARY MATERIALS?
When you sign out a library book you are agreeing to return your library materials on time. You also agree to take care of your library materials so that they will be in good shape for the next user. Miss Knauss and Mrs. Doukakis understand that things happen and are always willing to work with you in case materials are late or are in some way damaged. Books that are damaged beyond repair or are lost you will have to pay the cost of the book. Remember that these materials were purchased with your parents' tax dollars. Treat them as if you bought them yourself!
WHERE DO I RETURN LIBRARY MATERIALS?
When the SLMC is open, you should return materials to the circulation desk. Please check materials to make sure that you have not left anything important in the books or magazines. You would be surprised at the things we have found inside of the returned books! When the SLMC is closed, your teacher might still send you to the SLMC to return books - please place your books on the circulation desk.
HOW DO I FIND BOOKS IN THE SLMC?
The greatest resource for locating books and information in the SLMC is to ask Mrs. Doukakis. Please feel free to ask question of her. Helping you find information is one the main parts of her job. Mrs. Doukakis can help you use the card catalog. Printed directions on using the card catalog are available.
THE CATALOG CARD
The Evergreen Avenue Elementary SLMC uses the card catalog to help you locate the books in the SLMC. The Card Catalog is an index to the entire library collection. You can look up a book by it's author, it's title, or by subjects. All the catalog cards are interfiled in alphabetical order.
A call number consists of the DD# and the first three letters of the authors last name. The call number of the book will always appear in the upper left hand corner of the catalog card. The same number will appear on the spine of the library book, on the book card and the book pocket.
THE DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM
The SLMC is arranged by the Dewey Decimal System. This is a numerical system used by smaller libraries to arrange books on the shelves. When you locate the call number of the book you want to use- you will then go to the appropriate shelve and locate the book.
