Dear Parents/Guardians and students,

Welcome to Evergreen Avenue Elementary School! I am so excited to be joining the Woodbury family as the new principal of a school with such a rich history and reputation.

My personal goal is to make a difference in the life of every child who enters our doorways. It is my strong belief that your child is capable of reaching his/her maximum potential, for success, when provided with a well-rounded schooling experience that addresses the development of the whole child. School should be an environment that fosters and promotes growth emotionally, socially, physically, and academically. I believe Evergreen is that place.

We are committed to making sure every student feels like he/she is a vital part of a community and is encouraged to strive for greatness. These efforts go hand in hand with our home/school partnerships. It is our hope that you will actively get involved with your child’s education. Feel free to talk to your child’s teacher to find out how you can volunteer or visit the classroom throughout the school year. We invite you to join our school’s PTO and support school-wide efforts to help make Evergreen the best it can be. Your involvement is paramount to the success of your child and his/her school.

Evergreen Avenue Elementary School
Teacher of the Year 2008

Shin-Yin Estes Evergreen Avenue School Mrs. Shin-Yin Estes arrived in Woodbury approximately 10 years ago through a grant from the Dodge Foundation. When the funding ended, Shin-Yin was invited to stay and earned her certification through the Alternate Route. Teaching Chinese to children is an outlet for her creativity, musical talent and theater background, all showcased during the annual Chinese New Year Show. Over the years, Evergreen parents have embraced Shin-Yin and her very special program; many of them attending the Chinese New Year show this year were quite impressed to see their children perform and speak Chinese. Without a doubt, her Chinese language program has helped students learn to appreciate other world cultures. Clearly, Mrs. Estes loves being with the children and they love being with her! Her teaching philosophy is that students can learn while having fun.

Evergreen Avenue School Teacher of the Year 2007 Kathy Estep Kathy is a 3rd grade teacher. She is a dynamic and energetic teacher who is passionate about her students’ social and emotional learning as she incorporates academic rigor within the classroom routine. Kathy is a leader at Evergreen Avenue School, developing wonderfully integrated lessons, coordinating enriching school wide activities and trips, teaching summer school, as well as the after-school achievement academies, and hostessing “dance club.” Evergreen Avenue School is delighted to have Kathy recognized as our Teacher of the Year and our congratulations resonate throughout our building.
