Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to take a moment to personally introduce myself and welcome you and your family to the Walnut Street Elementary School for the 2012-2013 school year. My name is Jeffrey Adams and I am the Principal of the Walnut Street School. This is my sixth year as Principal of Walnut, and my eleventh year with the district. During that time, I have made many connections to students, staff, families and community members within the city of Woodbury. I truly feel at home here; what a wonderful place to work! Woodbury is a very special place indeed.
Woodbury is unique as a small, yet diverse community-based school system that offers a host of educational and extra-curricular opportunities; while at the same time strives to deliver a personalized education to all of our students. This concept of a personalized education developed through a partnership with the school, students, and community could be no truer than at Walnut Street Elementary. Walnut Street capitalizes on our small, tight-knit community atmosphere and fosters a wonderful environment for children to learn and grow. Our teachers and support staff are truly exceptional individuals who know that the education of our students is their number one priority. As a result, our students not only leave here with a solid foundation of academic knowledge, but also with the ethics and interpersonal skills necessary to become responsible and productive members of the community. We achieve this goal through the development of a collaborative partnership with faculty, support staff, families, and the broader community of Woodbury.
On that note, this year we will be evolving our parental/community partnership through our Keep Love Present initiative that will build on previous year’s work. Furthermore, we continue to have opportunities for parents to be active members of our Walnut community through the HSA, Room Parent assignment and PAC (Principal’s Advisory Committee). Once we set a schedule of those meetings, we will send you formal invitations to join us. Also take advantage of our technology outreach by following us on Twitter at: Walnut_Elem@twitter.
Furthermore, ongoing communication between you and your child’s teacher from the beginning of school is important to facilitate a strong team-based approach to education. Together, through our successful collaboration, we will increase your child’s opportunities for developmental growth, learning, and success.
On behalf of the entire Walnut Street Staff, we look forward to working with you and your child during the 2012-2013 school year. Together, we will make it another wonderful year at Walnut Street Elementary School.
Sincerely yours,
Jeffrey W. Adams, Psy.D.

Ms. Romano has been a fixture at the Walnut Street School the past twenty years. She is seen by her colleagues as a leader in the building and as someone who is always there to provide support, advice and guidance. Ms. Romano is a master teacher who implements proven as well as innovative instructional strategies and methods. Most importantly, however, it is her relationship with her students focusing on empathy, compassion, high expectations and unwavering support that is the hallmark of her educational legacy. Congratulations Ms. Romano for a well-deserved honor!
It is with great pleasure that I introduce Ms. Capodanno as the Walnut Street School Teacher of the Year. I actually met Ms. Capodanno several years ago at a job fair at the University of Delaware and was immediately impressed with her professionalism, knowledge of ESL instructional methods and her overall dynamic outgoing personality. From that chance meeting Ms. Capodanno met with a broader interview team back at Woodbury and a few weeks later she formally joined the Woodbury Public Schools instructional team. Over the course of the past three years I have had the pleasure of watching Ms. Capodanno work with students, staff and parents across all three elementary schools as well as the Jr/Sr High School. She epitomizes the words ‘team player’ and always is willing to the extra mile to do whatever it takes to support her students and the broader Walnut community. I am pleased to announce Ms. Capodanno as our teacher of the year and feel it is an honor she has graciously earned.
