Fiction Reading:

1) Respond to the following prompt in a well-argued, well-supported, formal analysis essay.  Remember to have a clear, strong thesis; specific details from the text (cited in correct MLA format); and explanations of how the specific details prove your thesis.  You may cite from secondary sources; if you choose to cite outside works, be sure to cite using MLA and include a Works Cited page.  Edit and proofread all work carefully.  This essay must be at least three pages, in MLA format.  The essay must be turned in to turnitin.com by the second day of school.  Our class ID for turnitin.com is 12779960 and our password is apenglish.

2) The Assessment of your thorough reading of these texts will occur somewhere in the first 4-7 days of school.  The assessment will mostly consist of a series of passages from the novel for which you will have to provide the context and the significance of the passages.

This will count as a 100-point test for the first marking period.  Please make sure you have access to this book in September as you will be using it within the first month of school.

Non Fiction Reading:

Read the book, and then write a one-page entry for each of the nine chapters and the epilogue. Describe the argumentative structure of the chapter (in other words, how does he make his argument in this chapter?) and discuss the thoroughness of proof for Gladwell’s assertions. Are you convinced? What assumption(s) does he make? What questions are not answered? What areas are not discussed?

You do not need to answer all of these questions; these questions are merely suggestions on what can be discussed in evaluating his argument.

This assignment will be turned in on turnitin.com by the 2nd day of school.  Please be sure that you have access to this book throughout the month of September.
