What is Athletic Training?

Athletic Training is an allied health care profession recognized by the American Medical Association. The certified athletic trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, management and rehabilitation of injuries. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic healthcare team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs, industrial settings and other healthcare environments.

Athletic Trainers are board certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification and licensed by the State board of medical examiners.

While practice act oversight varies by state, the athletic trainer practices under state statutes recognizing them as health care professionals similar to physical therapists, occupational therapists and other health care professionals. Athletic trainers practice under the direction of physicians.
