2011 Periodic Update of the Strategic Plan: Personalizing Education

The Periodic Update of the Strategic Plan (2010-11 school year)

During the third year of implementation of the district’s Strategic Plan, the Woodbury City Board of Education assembled a new planning committee to review the status of our work to date; consider any changes that have occurred in Woodbury, the state or nationally that impact our work; and make recommendations for areas to remove from the plan, modify, or add.

This group met for a two day session on Friday, September24, 2010 and Saturday 25, 2010. The individuals involved received written reports to review and presentations from administrators on the status of the various action plans that were being carried out to date. Ultimately, recommendations for change were agreed to by the group and these were then forwarded to new subcommittees specifically solicited and charged with determining a final recommendation.

The planning committee reconvened on March 4, 2011 and heard the reports from the three sub-committees. A final document was agreed to that included minor adjustments to the original plan. These changes were approved by the Board of Education at their March 23, 2011, meeting and take effect with the new 2011-12 school year.

The Original Work to Develop the district’s Strategic Plan

A thirty-person committee met November 29, 30, and December 1, 2007, to begin the work of developing a new five-year strategic plan for Woodbury City Public Schools. The team consisted of a diverse group that included students, parents, community members, teachers, support staff, board members, and school administrators. The time was well spent and much was accomplished. A draft strategic plan for our district was successfully developed.

During that first session, beliefs, a mission and objectives were developed based on what the group thought to be in the best interest of our students. From the discussions, five specific strategies were outlined to ensure we achieve our district’s goals.

Each of these five strategies required an Action Team to formulate the specific tasks required to reach the objectives. The first action team meetings took place in January 2008, with subsequent meetings taking place approximately once per week through May 2008. Each team consisted of approximately fifteen individuals who, again, represented all segments of the school community.

The initial strategic planning team, with the addition of the leaders of the action teams, met on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, 2008, for the third phase of the planning efforts. The goal was to finalize a plan in those sessions that could be presented to the Board for approval -- one that will take the district through the next five years, 2008 – 2013.

This final plan was approved by the Woodbury City Board of Education on June 25, 2008.
