The Woodbury Public Schools have announced that a special Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Conference Room located in the Jr.-Sr. High School. The Board will be hearing a presentation from professionals – architect and engineers – regarding an update on the structural status of the Walnut Street Elementary School. This report is the result of investigatory work determining the scope of repairs needed for the foundation supporting the oldest portion of the school building. This purpose of the investigation was to result in a recommendation for possible repair or replacement of this foundation. The formal report associated with this investigatory work is still being prepared, but preliminary indications are that significant structural concerns associated with the oldest part of the school will require the Board’s immediate attention. Currently, independent work on a new HVAC system is being completed. The contractor completing this work and other district personnel assigned to the Walnut Street Elementary School have been advised of the preliminary concerns. Temporarily, entrance to the school will be along Chestnut Street by the all-purpose room. Joseph Jones, Superintendent, indicated that, “These new concerns are an outgrowth of work the district was undertaking to complete maintenance efforts associated with the oldest section of the building. The administration and board are disappointed that the early indication points to significant structural concerns needing attention.” Frank Gwalthney, Board President, stated, “The Board supported the efforts of residents this past school year to maintain our instructional program at the Walnut Street School. It is unfortunate that we now face a new hurdle. The full board awaits the final report and recommendation that will be received at the August 13th meeting.” To view the various reports see the links on the left side of this page. |
