Woodbury City School Teachers of the Year for 2009

Here within the Woodbury City Public Schools, we believe that there is no career more noble than the field of education. As educators we not only teach basic academic competencies but also teach life lessons that help develop our students into young individuals of moral character. In doing so we help to shape society and prepare our students for a future full of potential and success. We, as a district, would like to honor the following teachers as representatives of all the wonderful teachers in our district who work hard and tirelessly to provide for the students of Woodbury the best education possible.

Evergreen TOY

Jill Platt
Evergreen Avenue School

If you are looking for the Special Education students’ biggest advocate, look no further, she is at Evergreen. She is Mrs. Jill Platt, a veteran Special Education teacher who started teaching in Woodbury in 1993. She came to Woodbury after spending some time teaching Home Economics in a high school setting in other New Jersey districts and a vocational center in Vermont. She brings to the teaching profession a wealth of experiences with students as young as preschool and as old as college aged. Mrs. Platt enjoys the daily challenges of helping her students learn and it shows in her dedication. She is always looking for new ways to differentiate instruction for her students and demonstrates this in the varying activities she uses to keep her students meaningfully engaged. It is not uncommon to see Mrs. Platt taking advantage of the opportunity to train future educators, as she has volunteered her time to mentor nine student teachers.

walnut TOY

Chrissy Pierce
Walnut Street School

Ms. Pierce has been instructing our 4th grade students here at Walnut over the course of the past seven years. She takes great pride in her classroom and approaches each day with a sense of urgency, compassion, and dedication. Ms. Pierce truly takes the time to get to know each of her students on an intimate level, epitomizing the district’s mission statement of ‘being a leader in personalized education’. Within the building, Ms. Pierce is often collaborating with other staff members in an effort to develop new projects and activities for her students. For example, last year she piloted a pen pal program with soldiers in Iraq that integrated technology instruction and the development of narrative CD’s that were sent overseas to the pen pals. Furthermore, Ms. Pierce has been active in the building, as well as on a district-wide level, as the Walnut Street Safety Patrol Monitor and a member of the district Strategic Plan Committee. Once again, congratulations to Ms. Pierce on behalf of the Walnut Street family.

West End TOY

Andrea Brown
West End Memorial School

Mrs. Andrea Brown, a kindergarten teacher at West End Memorial Elementary School, has 10 years of experience as a primary educator, working with the school's youngest students. Mrs. Brown's love of teaching and desire to become the best that she can are evident in her daily performance. She not only makes an impact in the classroom but on building-wide projects. Through her annual participation at the Kindergarten Convention, Mrs. Brown has embraced classroom strategies that teach her students to read, write and think. Mrs. Brown expects each student to give their personal best in every endeavor and expects no less of herself. She is warm, humorous and presents a feeling tone in her classroom that's extremely conducive to learning. She meets every day with a positive attitude. Mrs. Brown is a truly dedicated and passionate individual who makes many sacrifices to put her best efforts into the classroom.
