Students in Ms. Thomulka’s chemistry classes enjoyed an interesting experiment recently. Using Easy Bake ovens that Ms. Thomulka bought with money from a Bristol Meyers Squibb micro-grant she won through the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, students explored the effect of baking on physical and chemical properties. The students made two types of pancake batter and had to determine a mystery ingredient, which made one pancake much darker and “burned” looking. The students then classified their observations as a physical or a chemical change.
